JIALIAN DESIGN, formerly known as JL Design, was founded by Zhang Zhang in Chongqing, China, in 2009. Guided by “Feng Ya Zi Ran” — Nature · Culture · Life, we create landscapes rooted in nature and culture, with a focus on lasting connections between people, people and nature.
With a team of around 40 professionals, JIALIAN DESIGN is a boutique design practice driven by strategic thinking and a pursuit of spatial character. We apply rational and research-based design strategies and methodologies to provide clients with the best design solutions. Drawing on our experience in Chongqing’s mountainous environment, we specialize in exploring mountainous and complex-terrain projects, and have developed distinctive design methods and practical expertise.
JIALIAN DESIGN has received the AMP American Architecture Awards – Company of the Year Award, while our projects have earned numerous international design honors, including IFLA AAPME, Architizer A+Awards, WLA, DNA Paris Design Awards, AMP, IDA, MUSE, and A’ Design Award. We respect the uniqueness of every site and believe that every project has its own answer. Since launching our international business in 2025, we have provided landscape design and professional consulting services worldwide.

ZHANG Zhang
Founder / Principal Designer / Senior Landscape Engineer
Zhang Zhang began his career at Turenscape and the Tsinghua University Design Institute before founding JIALIAN DESIGN in 2009.
As the Founder and Principal of JIALIAN DESIGN, Zhang Zhang developed the design philosophy of “Feng Ya Zi Ran” — Nature · Culture · Life, advocating an approach that draws inspiration from nature and local contexts, while responding to contemporary landscape practice through Eastern wisdom. He also developed the concept of “Half-Space”, exploring the transitional space between landscape and people as a means of encouraging open, equal, and intimate interactions between individuals.
