The project seeks grandeur in the bold architectural form and inspiration in the vitality of nature. Drawing on the vastness of the South China Sea, the concept is structured around sea, wave, and vessel: the sea as the spatial foundation, waves as the shaping language, and vessels as the symbolic form. Together, they convey the momentum of setting sail and the inclusive spirit of embracing all things.
The design places strong emphasis on the genius loci of the site. Regional identity is embedded throughout the landscape—from local construction traditions and material choices to the project’s relationship with the surrounding community. Through techniques of borrowed scenery, axial view-making, and unfolding spatial sequences, the landscape expresses a sense of coastal magnificence, dignity, and richness.
Sea
The sea receives all rivers, embodying breadth of mind.
Its tides rise and fall, suggesting restless aspiration.
Its surging waves test the limits of life.
With the sea as the underlying spatial metaphor, the design translates its openness, depth, and quiet dignity into the landscape. It also serves as the connective tissue of the entire site, bringing together the imagery of sea, wave, and vessel into a unified spatial composition and evoking a poetic harmony between people and nature.
Wave
An expandable spatial framework is integrated with the urban structure. Its linear system extends toward the city park like a process of cellular growth, strengthening the continuity between site and city.
The undulating landform, conceived as waves, creates a protective sense of enclosure along the perimeter. The interior water surface contributes to a more comfortable microclimate, while the sloped terrain helps balance earthwork on site, organize drainage, and support stormwater retention and dispersion—allowing the landscape to function like a sponge that collects, holds, and gradually releases water.
Vessel
Groves of canopy trees rise from sculpted reef-like landforms, recalling mangroves scattered across a bay. Floating among pedestrian routes like vessels on water, they also resemble stars suspended in a deep blue sky, quietly witnessing the project’s spirit of openness and abundance.
The “large vessel and small boats” poised above the water appear like sails ready to unfurl—charged with the energy to depart, meet the wind, and break through the waves.
