Design Philosophy
Drawing inspiration from the essence of traditional Chinese classical gardens — where “the pavilion serves as the visual soul, and the experience unfolds through movement and observation” — the project positions the “Qi Pavilion”* as the central landscape node of the community. It seeks to break away from the pressures of fast-paced urban living by reintroducing moments of pause, breathing, and contemplation into everyday life.
The design integrates poetic mountain-and-water imagery, light and shadow artistry, leisure-oriented settings, and pavilion architecture into a unified spatial experience. Here, the pavilion is not merely a landscape feature, but the social and emotional nucleus of the community — a place to appreciate, sit, gather, and dwell. The result is an all-age-friendly environment that conveys a calm, refined, and effortless lifestyle.
Core Landscape Design
1. A Mountain-and-Water Setting: The Pavilion Within the Landscape
Inspired by the atmosphere of mountain streams and layered waterscapes, the project establishes a multi-tiered water composition complemented by seasonal foliage trees such as Chinese tallow trees, creating richly framed views throughout the year. The pavilion is positioned at the visual heart of the landscape, evoking the depth and poetic resonance of traditional Chinese shanshui paintings.
Ascending stone pathways guide residents gradually upward, while misting water features recreate the ambiance of morning mountain fog. Through a carefully choreographed sequence of framed views, the journey toward the pavilion unfolds with a sense of progressive discovery, encouraging visitors to slow down and immerse themselves in nature.
Filtered sunlight through the woodland canopy further enhances the pavilion’s atmosphere, allowing architecture, trees, water, and sky to merge into a unified visual and spiritual focal point for the community.
2. The Pavilion Core: A Multifunctional Place for Retreat and Gathering
The pavilion adopts an open and transparent architectural structure. Its lightly extended rooflines and expansive visual openness optimize ventilation and views, allowing wind, light, and scenery to flow naturally through the space.
Inside, a multifunctional social setting is carefully curated with lounge seating and a sunset-facing bar counter, accommodating diverse modes of use — from casual neighborhood gatherings and tea conversations to quiet moments of solitude and reflection. The pavilion becomes the community’s shared living room.
A rotating water-screen installation interacts with adjacent fountain features, creating dynamic framed views through movement. Combined with the sound of flowing water and shifting light reflections, the installation enhances spatial interaction and sensory richness.
Warm-toned wood-textured paving materials soften the coolness often associated with hardscape environments, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that balances aesthetic refinement with everyday comfort.
3. Integrated Living Scenarios: A Landscape for All-Day Community Life
With the pavilion as its organizational core, the project establishes an interconnected network of landscape pathways linking diverse community programs, including open-air cinema spaces, nature-inspired reading areas, and waterside viewing platforms. The pavilion thus becomes both the starting point and social anchor of community life.
Warm ambient lighting integrated into the pavilion structure creates a soft and comforting nighttime atmosphere, extending the usability of the space throughout the day and evening.
Through the organic integration of circulation and spatial programming, the design achieves a relationship in which “the pavilion emerges from the landscape, while the landscape gathers around the pavilion.” What begins as a singular architectural gesture expands into a multidimensional community experience for all ages, all times, and all senses.
Design Conclusion
Using the “Qi Pavilion” as its conceptual entry point, the project demonstrates how a small yet carefully articulated landscape intervention can express the broader temperament and richness of community life.
By merging the philosophy of traditional Chinese garden-making with the needs of contemporary residential living, the design encourages a slower and more mindful rhythm of life. Through walking, pausing, observing, and gathering, residents are invited to form gentle connections with nature, space, and themselves.
Ultimately, the project creates a community landscape that balances poetic natural imagery, human warmth, and practical livability — restoring a more authentic pace of living and allowing everyday life to be experienced with softness and care.
