Design Concept
Guided by the principles of regional integration, light-and-shadow narrative, and serene living, the design extracts local identities unique to Changsha — including the city tree camphor, the landscapes of the Xiang River, and the wild cursive calligraphy of Zhang Xu. Inspired by the solar term Grain Full (Xiaoman) and its philosophy of “modest fullness,” the project softens spatial boundaries, choreographs dynamic light conditions, and creates immersive natural retreats where residents can rediscover a slower and more peaceful rhythm of life.
Core Landscape Design
1. Blurring the Boundary
Native vegetation is used to dissolve the edge between city and community, creating a seamless and welcoming arrival experience.
Camphor Woodland Belt
The camphor tree, emblematic of Changsha, is planted along the street frontage and connected with the municipal streetscape to form a continuous urban woodland, visually softening the site boundary and allowing the community to merge naturally with the city.
Ink Pool Calligraphy Sculptures
Inspired by the expressive energy of Zhang Xu’s cursive script, two sculptural installations are positioned above a reflective ink-like water feature. One restrained and one dynamic, together they reinterpret the grandeur and momentum of the Xiang River while establishing a striking entrance focal point.
Acoustic Buffering
Layers of camphor groves combined with flowing water help filter urban noise, creating a calm transitional threshold between city life and residential living.
2. The Central Courtyard
Using light, water, and architectural structures as narrative elements, the courtyard becomes an immersive spatial experience shaped by time and atmosphere.
Terraced Cascading Water Feature
A four-tier cascading water system unfolds progressively through the site, intertwining reflections, greenery, and shifting daylight. Mirrored stone surfaces amplify the sense of fluidity and depth within the landscape.
Art Sculptures
Elegant sculptural pieces with soft curves and natural textures are paired with ripple-inspired water imagery to reinforce the courtyard’s tranquil ambience.
Light-and-Shadow Gallery
Perforated walls introduce natural light and planting into the space, creating an ever-changing “theatre of light and shadow.” A winding covered corridor connects the landscape nodes throughout the site, functioning both as circulation and as a spatial promenade resembling a flowing scroll painting.
Atmospheric Experience
Sunlight filtering through dense trees and flowering plants casts delicate patterns across walls and pavements, giving the space a warm and refined natural texture.
3. Leisure and Retreat Spaces
The project creates a nature-oriented environment for all ages — a place to stroll, pause, observe, and reconnect with the pleasures of everyday life.
Curvilinear Water Features and Open Lawn
Softly shaped water edges and expansive lawns create relaxed spaces for waterside rest and distant views, encouraging moments of contemplation and calm.
Textured Walls and Framed Views
Layered wall treatments and perforated view frames establish visual dialogue between interior and exterior spaces, enriching spatial depth and scenic composition.
Planting Strategy
Anchored by camphor trees and complemented by seasonal foliage such as red maples, the planting palette introduces vibrant accents within a predominantly green landscape, ensuring year-round visual richness.
Flowing Groundcover Design
Undulating planting lines inspired by musical staves create a rhythmic and fluid ground pattern, transforming the landscape into a visual symphony of nature and daily life.
Design Summary
China Merchants Jiangshanjing takes the philosophy of “modest fullness” as its spiritual foundation, weaving Changsha’s cultural identity into a contemporary natural landscape. Through flowing water, layered greenery, and shifting light, the project creates a poetic residential retreat where life unfolds with quiet grace and a profound sense of belonging.
